This week new trailers (do TV shows have trailers? I guess they do now) have launched for the new series(-es) forthcoming from Joss Whedon (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” “Firefly”) and J.J. Abrams (“Lost,” “Alias”). You can get a gander at Whedon’s “Dollhouse” here and Abrams’s “Fringe” here. My impressions? It’s hard to get a feel for “Dollhouse” which has a premise that merges River of “Firefly” with some of the concept of Abrams’s “Alias.” The preview is reasonably slick but the cast is a bit odd. Maybe I’m just having trouble with it because I never cared much for Eliza Dushku. I suppose Joss just couldn’t sell Fox on “The Further Adventures of River Tam.” “Fringe” offers the more powerful trailer – in fact it looks like a movie I’d be quite willing to pay $9 to see, never mind a TV show beamed into my house for free – but the net is burbling that the premise seems to basically be an “X-Files” re-write, and it’s hard to argue the point. One would have hoped that Abrams’s next project would be as daring and hard to describe as “Lost” is. Ah well, maybe they’ll throw in a random polar bear or something.
