Hollywood to remake entire history of film

Here’s the remake news today. This is possibly the most pointless idea for a remake I’ve ever heard of. “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes” - really? You’re remaking a mildly funny, no-budget satire that is only remembered for its goofy concept and the involvement of George Clooney? Are we going to be remaking “Scary Movie 3″ in a few years?

Somebody needs to step into that backroom full of monkeys at typewriters and start handing out more incentive bananas.

The Propositions, "Africana"

Heavy, heavy funk from an obscure band that only put out one album. For fans of the pure stuff.

James Blood Ulmer, "Tales of Captain Black"

It took some effort to dig up this import CD (now out of print I think), but I've owned a beat up LP copy of this for years. Ulmer is a blues/jazz/avant garde freak of a guitarist, and this (his best and most famous) album was recorded with Ornette Coleman and some of Coleman's regular sidemen. This is the shape of jazz, and some other shit, to come.

Death Cab for Cutie, "Narrow Stairs"

I guess you know who they are. Right to the point then: "Narrow Stairs" is pretty good but I liked "Transatlanticism" better. However, the song "Long Division" off this album is one of my favorites that they've done. I kind of wish Gibbard would get working on a second Postal Service album though.

Interment/Funebrarum, "Conjuration of the Sepulchral"

I've never been much for split releases but this one teams up two frighteningly good death metal bands. Interment dates back to the dawn of Swedish death metal, and has that classic Entombed/Dismember sound; this is their first official release after cranking out some demos over a decade ago, and they blow the doors off. Funebrarum is a modern band that sounds like an old one - perhaps close to Incantation, with thunderous-yet-atmospheric riffing and deep, dark vocals.

Quasimoto, "The Further Adventures of Lord Quas"

Helium-voiced alter ego Quasimoto raps like an alien on pot (lots and lots of pot) over original ego Madlib's dusty, funky, broken-up, weed-suffused rhythm tracks. It's a heavenly combination, and nothing else really resembles it. This album is good but the first one ("The Unseen") is truly brilliant.

Busy Signal, "Holding Firm"

This Japan-only CD is a fairly worthy successor to Busy's Greensleeves debut, the impressive "Step Out." That one still gets the nod over this, but there are some great tunes here too. I'm lukewarm on the first/title track, but "Get Bright," "Rasclaart," and "Double Rhyme" (among others) are all excellent dancehall singles. The only low spot is the annoying track "The Letter P," presented acapella so you can focus on the irritating chorus even better.
